Hippies
Everyone has heard of the stereotypical 60's hippie. We often see their style used for Halloween costumes and for comedy, for example, Leo from That 70's Show, (played by Tommy Chong). However, the clothing they wore had more to it than to blend in with the rest of the hippie subculture. The dress of the hippies was a representation of who they were and what they believed in.
Hippie clothing typically had folkloric motifs, style, and fabrics. Much of it was inspired by native american clothing. Most of it was loose and flowing. They sometimes recycled old clothing garments to make new ones. These concepts were not practiced simply because they thought they looked cool. It was not for a sense of fashion. In fact, the hippies' clothing is often considered "anti-fashion." It went against what was considered fashionable to most of society and the main culture. Their clothing and style was part of what made them counter-cultural .
