Crime and rebellion was a part of the counterculture that extended to more than just the political hippies. The use of drugs were a large part of their statement of rebellion. Smoking marijuana was a normal experience by the late 60's. 70 percent of 18-25 year-olds had smoked weed according to a 1970 study. The drugs significant to this era were psilocybin mushrooms, LSD, and mescaline. However, in the 70's, there was a shift toward use of harder drugs like cocaine, amphetamines, and heroin. Drugs were not the only illegal forms of rebellion that were popular among the counterculture. By the late 70's, half of all crimes were committed by people from ages of 10-17. This was near the latter end of the countercultural period, when it was beginning to diminish.
