Young people of the 60's rejected capitalism, competition, social conventions, and the work ethic of their parents. They were in support of communitarianism, cooperation, toleration, and being unique. In contrast to the heterosexual monogamy of their parents, the young people supported sexual experimentation; in place of the three-martini lunch, these young people had marijuana picnics. For those embracing the counterculture, sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll became more popular and valued than hard work, sobriety, and suburbia. A growing distance between the young and old in america was part of the reason counterculture came about. Young people were attracted to the rebelliousness of counterculture due the traditional work discipline and personal mores being upheld less with little to no cost. These young people were against where the United States was headed and they wanted to do something about that belief.
